                              Autism: Putting the Pieces Together
A Special Event for Parents, Teachers and Professionals

The University of North Carolina- Wilmington will host a Symposium and Resource Fair on Saturday, March 27th, 2010
entitled
Putting the Pieces Together.

When you have a special-needs child, the first thing you may get is a diagnosis. You say, "what do I do now?".

The upcoming event is designed to help parents answer that question, find resources and each other. Professionals will
have the opportunity to meet, connect and form on-going collaborative
groups. Families will have the opportunity to begin and join support networks. Wilmington and surrounding counties
are a Treasure Chest of families on a mission to "recover" their children and professionals dedicated to helping families
improve their quality of life.

The 'pieces' that have helped children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) include behavioral, bio-medical, nutrition,
and social and communication programs. A panel discussion will include parents and professionals providing stories of
hope and encouragement and guiding you in 'putting the pieces together'.

The conference will feature top research and medical experts. Featured keynote speakers include
Jake Greenspan, one of the co-directors of DIR* Support Services in Bethesda, MD. DIR Support Services is a child
development center specializing in the use of the DIR
*/Floortime model. Jake and DIR co-director, Tim Bleeker, with the
help of
Dr. Stanley Greenspan, developed evaluation and intervention programs based on all aspects of the DIR model.
Their goal has been to develop and implement these intervention programs for children with a variety of developmental
and learning challenges.

The conference lunchtime speaker is
Dr. Karen Harum, founder of the not-for-profit Clinic for Special Children in
Wilmington, N.C. Because of her extensive training in biochemistry, Dr. Harum, a neuro-developmental pediatrician,
looks at autism much as a metabolic geneticist would. She employs traditional treatments such as behavior modification
techniques, but also looks for root causes of the disorder when tailoring treatment to an individual child. Please click
here for details on Dr. Harum's areas of expertise and the content of her presentation.

Dr. Ruth Hurst, Assistant Professor, UNC-Wilmington and Board Certified Behavior Analyst will present a lecture on
Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Early Intensive Behavior Intervention (EIBI). For information regarding her areas
of interest and expertise, current research, and lecture details, please click
here.

Nursing:  Another Sparkling Jewel in the Treasure Chest will be an interactive discussion of point of contacts between
nurses, autistic children and their families. Discussion facilitators are
Dr. Brenda Pavill, RN, Ph.D., FNP, IBCLC
(Associate Professor) and
Ms. Roberta Allred, RN, MS, LCCE, FACCE, CD (Lecturer) in the School of Nursing at UNC-
Wilmington.  Please follow this
link for additional information.

* The Developmental, Individual Difference, Relationship-based (DIR®/Floortime™) Model is a framework that helps
clinicians, parents and educators conduct a comprehensive assessment and develop an intervention program tailored to
the unique challenges and strengths of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other developmental challenges.
The objectives of the DIR®/Floortime™ Model are to build healthy foundations for social, emotional, and intellectual
capacities rather than focusing on skills and isolated behaviors.

"Space4Grace" is a group of local parents and friends who, in collaboration with service providers, autism support
groups and educators, are dedicated to organizing a high-quality, practical event.
